Upwork – The Online Office Job – Review

SHARE

Upwork, the right place to start your online job. Upwork is an online office – basically, a freelancing website. It’s an online staffing marketplace, management platform & outsourcing solution.

If you are bored of going-to-office or if you have free time & thinking how to spend useful, then you can join Upwork. Here is a short review of the same.

I have personally used Upwork to hire bloggers especially, when I was working with multiple niche blogs and also, for my gadget blog.

I am not a freelancer.

Its free to join Upwork (earlier called as Odesk).

First, you have to understand the two basic things about freelancing.office-620823_640

Employer : One who posts jobs to Upwork. They hire freelancers, assign jobs and pay them.

Freelancer : One who applies for the jobs posted by employer. Once hired, they work on the assigned job and gets paid.

Now you have learnt the basics of Upwork.

Here I am going to take you through the steps to become a freelancer & to start making money from Upwork.

The Upwork marketplace is huge and there are varied job markets available like:

  • Web development
  • Software development
  • Graphics Arts & Design
  • Audio/Video Multimedia
  • Networking & Informative systems
  • Administrative support
  • Technical Writer
  • Blog/copywriters
  • Data Entry Operator etc.

Steps to start with Upwork as freelancer.

1) Join Upwork & get your username & password

2) Complete your Upwork profile.

  • Your major part of earnings dependent on your profile, so that jobs suitable to you will reach to your inbox.
  • Before filling your profile, decide your area or domain of work.
  • Fill with more information as much as possible with whatever technology, tools, programming languages you known.
  • Don’t forget to add your certifications, experiences as your expertise list.
  • Major thing is your Title, select a very good & catchy title (like Expert C Programmer, 8+ xp Web developer, 100% accurate – Data Entry Operator etc.).

3) Now search for jobs (don’t worry they are posting 1000+ jobs per week) & apply.

4) Attend interview online & get hired.

5) Make money with Upwork.

Qualifications Needed for Upwork.

1) You should pass the Upwork Readiness Test. Don;t worry it is simple, it is an open book test about their terms & conditions of Upwork. (even if you fail, you can retry the test with Upwork)

2) My suggestion is to take your domain related tests available with them for ex. if you are joining as a HTML developer with Upwork, better take test on HTML, it adds your value to your profile.

You can earn from $1 to around $50+ per hour with Upwork, based on your knowledge & the commitments. Say, if you work for $20 per hour for 20 hours per week then, you will earn (20 * 20) = 400$ per week that’s a decent income for a freelancer.

I hope you got some basic ideas about Upwork & the kind of job.

Its free to join so you can give a try.

  1. I’m interested in making money online, do u give us guidelines how to do it for the beginners and how to join. Do we have 2 pay money before we join in?

  2. oDesk has been a great resource for me. I'm a buyer though and this seems more focused on providers. Either way, if you're considering it… give it a shot!

  3. You made some respectable points there. I appeared on the web for the issue and found most people will go together with along with your website.

  4. Howdy would you mind letting me know which web host you’re utilizing? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 different browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker then most. Can you suggest a good web hosting provider at a fair price? Cheers, I appreciate it!

    • This site is hosted with Godaddy. I analyzed each and every aspects of page loading and optimized it as far as possible – i would say, it is even possible to speed up more than now. Check pingdom tools which quickly tells which of the component takes more time to load, so that you could work on that to improve…

      See you again !

  5. Odesk is also good to find freelancers but I think it’s best if we consider other outsourcing sites that offer full-time workers. While competition among contractors is great, there is still high chance of getting hired unlike other sites where they get to bid a job. When I started looking for other similar sites, suddenly I discovered Staff.com and it looked quite impressive. You only need to post your details and one of their in-house specialists will contact you right away to set interview schedules for their shortlisted candidates. And what I liked most is their “Time Doctor” software that monitors hours worked and websites visited during business hours but not while the person is on a break. So this makes it appropriate for people working from home on their own computer.

  6. Hi ! Ven,
Thank you so much for this article. It came to me at such a right time and you came out to be my savior at thie point. I got to heard about oDesk from one of my friend’s friend, but didn’t actually know how it functions and how should i apply for jobs from this site. I was seriously struggling reading every clause and steps to make it out nor do i have anyone who can guide me clearly. Plus, I was desperately looking for other source of earning my income other than my regular salary because i can hardly manage my expenses with my salary.
Thank you so much once again, your article have really help me. Also, this is a very useful site.

    • Thanks for the comment Rebika, oDesk is trustworthy and its tough to get the few initial assignments, later it pays-back well once you built your profile.
