Small and large businesses use social media for marketing and as a means to communicate with consumers but in its essence, it is the social representation of your company. Social media places a fine line separating your reputation from consumer trust where the slightest mistakes can jeopardize your goals of consumerism, brand awareness, or perhaps the stable flow of traffic to your company website. There appears to be a trend among businesses with failed attempts in social media and personally, I’ve made some of them.
Unless you want to ruin the brand you’ve worked so hard to build, you should avoid making the social media mistakes that companies usually commit.
Mistake #1 – Lack of involvement
It’s not enough that you launch a social media campaign for your business. These accounts need to be constantly monitored as well. People usually use social media to vent out concerns regarding a website, products, and services. If you don’t check your company’s social profiles, you won’t be able to see if there’s anything wrong or be able to address the concerns of consumers.
My tip is to use social media for interacting with consumers whether it is for updating or addressing problems. Make a public announcement when dealing with the majority and as for individuals with isolated issues, redirect them to your company’s customer services.
Mistake #2 – Damage control not fast enough
Lack of involvement will cause frustrated customers to rant on your social media accounts. If media doesn’t get to them first, matters like these would go viral anyway and I don’t mean that in a good way. Bad word about your company’s ineffectiveness is going to spread like wildfire in the online community and tarnish your brand.
Instead of formulating a perfect speech as a cover up, focus on creating a damage control scheme that doesn’t take more than 24 hours. By acting fast, you can prevent any further damage on your company’s reputation.
Mistake #3 – Lack of experience
Personal lack of experience in social media or perhaps, entrusting your accounts to inexperienced individuals can be damaging to your marketing campaign. These two often translate to lack of professionalism when dealing with negative comments and reviews. It would be for the best interest of your company if you brush up on social media etiquette or hire a professional to help you.
The ideal person to handle social media is someone who fully understands how your company should be represented.
Mistake #4 – Maybe you’re not cross promoting
Are you not getting enough followers and likes on your social media accounts?
It’s probably because you’re not cross-promoting.
To put it simply, you should link your website to existing social media accounts and vice versa. This will encourage visitors of your company website to follow you on social media and your followers to visit your site.
Mistake #5 – Unclear goals
The biggest mistake businesses make when launching a social media campaign is they don’t have clear goals. Without a set goal, you won’t be able to come up with a plan. Let’s say you wish to attract visitors to your company website via social media. In order to do that, you should constantly update your company’s blog and share them to your streams.
Let’s say in an alternate universe, you didn’t know what you wanted out of social media. Do you think you would know what to do?
An effective social media campaign is a never-ending process. It is something that must be retained alongside your company, serving as the social voice of your brand.
Due to the ever-changing online community, learn to evolve and adapt to social trends. Most importantly, you should learn from past mistakes so as not to commit them again. The beauty about social media is that it is just as forgiving as it is prejudicial.
